Riyadh Air's pilot recruitment has, until recently, meant one thing: the Boeing 787-9. That appears to have changed around late August 2026, when candidates began reporting outreach about a new Airbus A321neo track — both Direct Entry Captain and First Officer roles.
If you've been tracking Riyadh Air as a 787-only opportunity, it's time to update that picture.
Riyadh Air placed a large order for Airbus A321neo family aircraft to run alongside its Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A350-1000 fleets — a genuine three-type operation from a standing start. Since late August 2026, candidates already in Riyadh Air's applicant pool have reported receiving outreach specifically about the A321neo programme, separate from the existing 787 pipeline.
A few things about the A321neo track are well-established, independent of any single candidate's account:
A candidate who reached the panel interview stage on the A321 track in September 2026 reported that it uses the same 8-case question bank and format as the existing 787 process — a single account, not an official confirmation.
Candidates report that the A321neo rollout has come in phases: the earliest hires were Airbus Cadre/Training Captains and TREs, along with Saudi national candidates, before broadening to a wider pool of nationalities and experience profiles from around 20 September 2026 onward.
One candidate's Direct Entry Captain screening reportedly listed a requirement of around 1,500 hours PIC on Airbus and 5,000 hours total time — but this hasn't been confirmed through an official channel, and other candidates in the same discussion questioned whether it's a hard cutoff or a preference.
As of late September 2026, no candidate has publicly reported reaching the A321neo simulator stage — the track appears to still be working through its interview stages for most applicants.
The good news for A321 candidates: because the panel interview format is shared with the 787 process, the preparation that already works for Riyadh Air's CBI and technical interview applies directly — CRM-driven decision making, risk mitigation and prevention, and high-workload management are the competency areas interviewers are listening for, regardless of which fleet you're applying for.

The A321neo track is still early — which means candidates who prepare now, before it's fully ramped up, have a real head start.
